Yang Sheng, or, the ancient art of nourishing life (or lifestyle coaching)

Yang Sheng is the art of nurturing vitality, and nourishing life. The aim of yangsheng is not just physical health. It aspires to harmony, the seamless integration of mind & body, physical and mental balance, serenity, detachment from excessive emotions, health and fitness into old age, wisdom, and ultimately an egoless identification with the Dao (everything that is).

Practised for at least two and a half thousand years, the art of nourishing life draws from a wide range of philosophical, cultural and medical traditions including Daoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, classical medicine, martial arts and folk knowledge.

There are broadly three ways to cultivate health and longevity:

1. avoiding behaviour that causes harm (think drinking, smoking, stress)

2. behaving in ways that actively promote health and well-being (think sleeping well, moving, eating well)

3. participating in activities that are thought to more deliberately ‘nourish life’, for example meditating, breathwork, practising qigong and other internal arts like yoga.

The lifestyle principles of Yang Sheng and Traditional Medicine are simple, there are no obscure diets, or expensive supplements, just the cultivation of ordinary behaviours.

If you have a sense that you should be living a life full of vitality and need a little support in bringing this into reality, you are in the right place.

The ordinary is the extraordinary.
