MOXIBUSTION (MOXA) THERAPY

Moxibustion, or Moxa, is an external heat therapy that involves gently burning a Chinese medicinal herb, Ai Ye (artemisia vulgaris, commonly known as mugwort), on or near acupuncture points or specific areas of the body.

Moxa is intricately connected to acupuncture treatment and is often used alongside it. It gently warms and nourishes the body to encourage the system to harmonise to balance, equilibrium, and health.

Clinical Applications of Moxibustion

Moxibustion supports many health conditions, from chronic pain to digestive disorders. By burning moxa at specific points, we warm and nourish the body, build blood and relieve pain.

At Vessel Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine, we use moxibustion in cases of chronic diarrhea, lowered immune function, heavy menstrual bleeding, turning breech babies (when safe & indicated), and relieving pain.

Boosting Immune Function and Other Benefits

Moxibustion’s versatility extends beyond pain relief and obstetric care. Your acupuncturist will use it to boost the immune system, enhance circulation, and promote healing by modulating the immune system. Moxibustion has shown anti-inflammatory effects by modifying cytokine levels and can increase white blood cell count when applied to specific acupuncture points.
